Letter from the President
Growing Football in Every British Columbia Community
To our football community and communities across British Columbia,
Football in British Columbia continues to grow, supported by the dedication of local clubs, leagues, coaches, officials, volunteers and families. New clubs are joining our provincial network, and communities are creating opportunities for more people to experience the game. The addition of the Bears Bantam and Midget Football Association in North Langley and the Prince George Minor Football Association reflects that progress.
As President of Football BC, I am encouraged by this growth and by the people making it possible. Every new program begins with individuals who believe football can contribute something meaningful to their community. Our goal is clear: to support the development of organized flag and tackle football in all British Columbia communities. We want children and youth to have the opportunity to learn and play football close to home, whether they live in a large urban centre, a small town, a rural community or a remote part of the province. Achieving that goal requires us to strengthen established programs while helping communities build new ones.
Flag and tackle football each have an important place in this work. Flag provides an accessible introduction to the game and opportunities for continued participation and competition. Tackle offers its own pathway for athletes to develop skills, work together and represent their communities. Football BC is committed to supporting both disciplines and helping participants find the opportunities that suit their interests and stage of development.
We also recognize that starting and sustaining a program takes more than enthusiasm. Communities need trained coaches, qualified officials, committed volunteers, suitable facilities and access to equipment. Families need programs that are welcoming, affordable and well organized. Safe sport, sound governance and responsible program delivery must remain central as we grow.
Our role is to work alongside local leaders to help build those foundations. That means supporting coach and officials development, helping new clubs understand their responsibilities, encouraging cooperation between communities and developing practical pathways into organized competition.
The needs of each community are different. A successful approach in one region may need to be adapted elsewhere, particularly where distance, travel costs or smaller populations affect participation. We must listen to local leaders and support programs that can grow at a sustainable pace.
To everyone already contributing to football in BC, thank you. Your time and commitment give participants a place to belong, learn and develop.
To communities interested in establishing or expanding flag or tackle football, we welcome the conversation. Football BC wants to work with you to explore what is possible and identify the steps needed to move forward.
Together, we can extend the reach of football and create lasting opportunities for communities throughout British Columbia.
Sincerely,
Kevin Parks
President, Football BC
